Roundup of Halifax Doulas

Let’s start simply, what is a doula?

A doula is someone who is hired to provide support and guidance to a pregnant person typically during labour and sometimes back at home postpartum. The services can differ depending on the doula and what they decide to offer.

Why should you hire a doula?

Let me tell you that after giving birth to three kids, I WISH that I would’ve done the research and hired a doula.

  • Less pressure on your partner
Labour is most likely the first time that your partner is going to see you in this much pain and a lot of the time they can feel totally helpless. They don’t know how to support you the best and that’s when a birth doula can step in, either give your partner a specific task or they can take over and your partner is able to just be present.
  • Provides encouragement, unbiased support and answers your questions
They are able to answer any/all of your questions any time of day or night. Your doula is there to share their knowledge so that you are able to make informed decisions.
  • To keep your birth plan on track as much as possible
Doulas are able to make sure that your birth plan and wishes stay in place as much as possible throughout your delivery, whether that’s at home or in the hospital. Sometimes when you’re in the thick of it, it’s hard to voice your opinion or ask questions.
  • To support you postpartum
They are able to support you and your new baby day/night. Doulas can watch your baby so you get a chance to sleep or shower, they could fold laundry, make a quick meal, run a couple of errands for you, They can help you with getting a great latch or supply struggles when you’re breastfeeding or even organize meal trains with your family.
